So whether you are doing this to improve the performance, or the look, the prepping is the same: Obviously, first and foremost, the floor has to be clear from everything that is movable. Aside from those items which are a permanent part of the structure, the floor cannot have anything on it. The process cannot even begin until all furniture, pallets, personal belongings, etc. have been moved away.
The next step is the mechanical preparation of the flooring. This is carried out by either sandblasting, grinding or other similar methods. This provides you with as clean a surface to work with that you can possibly get.
Now is the time for a thorough cleaning. This helps remove any dust or lingering debris, before the sealant is added. If this step is skipped or not completed in a thorough enough manner, the contaminants will be trapped. Plus, it can cause it to look shoddy or possibly not even adhere as well in some spots.
Then, the first coat of epoxy can be applied. If a second coat is being installed, the first coat must first be allowed to tack over.
Finally, a durable urethane topcoat is applied, which helps protect the new flooring. All of this together is what provides you with the best possible flooring, as well as finest protection for concrete surfaces.
Of course, you will want to mark off the area that has been sealed, to avoid traffic. Until the surface is completely cured, it should be avoided.
